One needs a finely tuned ear to distinguish a cry for help from a cry for attention, and the demands of your baby sister probably rendered your parents tone deaf. I wonder if they have ever shed their double breasted cloaks of guilt and grief?

This sounds like it could be me wearing that double breasted cloak of guilt and grief.
I hope your story is not as sad as this one; his parents thought that he was jealous of all the attention his sister was getting, and so ignored his behaviour. He was eventually diagnosed with leukemia and died when he was 4.
oh my ... now my heart carries such a sadness for him, and for them ... I'd like to think that he is in a place where he can be heard, now.
So sad.
